Haven Smith & Company

Hi, I’m Ashley. I make complex systems work for everyday people.

For more than twenty years, I have helped build the systems our day-to-day lives depend on, at JPMorgan Chase, Apple, and Oracle. Now I help teams make their products accessible, and I help families organize and protect their digital lives.

Work with me

Accessibility, trust and safety, and AI-native product research and design.

There are four ways to work with me. Open each one below to see how it works.

  1. Accessibility, plus everything else that decides whether people can use and trust your product.

As a DHS Certified Trusted Tester, I test your site or app against WCAG 2.2 AA with screen readers, keyboards, captions, and zoom. A+ means accessibility, plus: I also look at usability, trust and safety, site performance, and search.

    1. 01TestAutomated checks and hand testing on every page.
    2. 02Walk throughYour score, your report, and my proposed fixes.
    3. 03DecideMake the fixes on your own, or bring me in.

Know a team that needs an accessibility audit?

If your team, or a team you know, needs an audit or a part-time principal designer and researcher, I would love an introduction. Every project starts with a conversation and a clear price.

Why I wrote Accounted For

I wrote Accounted For because it was never a discipline problem.

Nobody sits down and decides to keep their passwords in three places, their documents in five, and the recovery codes on a phone they no longer own. It piles up. Every account you opened in a hurry. Every file you saved somewhere sensible at the time. Every service that changed its name.

And it holds up, right until the day it doesn’t. You get a new phone. You change your number. You spend a week in the hospital. Then all at once, you find out how much of your life was held together by memory alone.

That is not a character flaw. It is a missing system, and this book is that system.

By the numbers

The gaps this book closes

  • 48%

of US adults have no instructions for their digital accounts and files

  • 23%

have a will and still have no digital instructions

  • 61%

of US consumers reuse passwords across their accounts

Trust & Will 2026 Estate Planning Report, a survey of 5,000 US adults by Talker Research, January 2026. Password reuse: GoDaddy Consumer Pulse, 2025. Having a will is not the same as having a plan.

Inside the book

Organizing is how it starts. The handover is how it ends.

From the book

Life has highs and lows. You do not get to choose when the lows arrive. What you do get to choose is what you set up while things are good.

Meet the founder

Hi, I’m Ashley.

I have worked for more than twenty years in accessibility, trust and safety, and product research and design. I helped create many of the systems our day-to-day lives depend on: banking, payments, identity, and fraud protection. One of my roles was vice president of product research at JPMorgan Chase. I hold a master’s degree in human factors and systems engineering, and I am a DHS Certified Trusted Tester.

I write books, teach, and build good products. Whatever brought you here, I’m glad you came.
